BTC_P2P -- 177d Very fair, modern commercial wood is absolutely inferior to lumber of past. But if you keep modern wood dry and in a properly built / conditioned environment it will last! I’ve thought about framing houses with cedar to avoid commercial doug fir 😂🤣🤣 reply [1 reply]Very fair, modern commercial wood is absolutely inferior to lumber of past. Unsolicited advice: if you’re building a house or any conditioned structure - use zip sheathing. OSB sheathing +house wrap is not a good engineering solution.
Depends...
On what in your opinion?
If you don't flash them correctly, both will fail at some point
That has to do with improper building techniques not the sheathing / wrap outcomes. But installed / flashedcorrectly zip will last centuries, and osb just can’t. Mostly because of the house wrap. The issue with sheathing covered in a house wrap is that the wrap has air bubbles behind it (even with the mostmeticulous install) and the temp differences between the conditioned space and the outside environment create adew point. The dew can’t move through the house wrap so it all stays trapped behind it in the interior walls ofthe house, molding and degrading them. Zip solves this problem.
Kinda disagree with that statement. I have seen them both fail in the field lolIf you truly want a building to last for centuries you build out of mansory, steel, concrete and/or rammed earthor a combo of all of them. That will last forever lol
What was the failure mode of zip that you’ve seen?If you’re building masonry you still need sheathing and a weather-proof barrier protecting it. So the issueswith dew point would be the same.
Not bashing on the Zip system at all as I have seen the same with building wraps. With Zip, the most commonfailures happen at the joints between panels as the tape is improperly adhered. Sometimes the wrong type of nailis used, leading to corrosion. The flashing around openings sometimes fails as it's not sequenced correctly... Ido see how it saves time and money tho. With the right crew, it goes fairly well
Install errors notwithstanding I think zip is far superior. Specifically because of the perfect adhesion of theweather proof membrane to the sheathing.
That's an advantage for sure. Still talking about wood construction which is really shitty and fiat asf.Disposable architecture
Lol wood house tech is a lot older than fiat money. Proper wood construction can last hundreds of years if builtand cared for correctly.I think a custom concrete earthship is probably the most bullet proof and efficient way to go but will startwith a timber framed barn where the second story is a domicile. First floor will be shop and gym space.
Nice man! Having the shop and gym at the ground floor is very smartThis is what I meant by shitty fiat construction lolhttps://youtube.com/shorts/taxmnGT5WEk

I bet you it would be much better than Doug Fir lol
